WELCOME TO THE UTILITY STANDARDS BOARD

The Utility Standards Board (USB) is a utility industry leader in developing open standards and promoting data interoperability in support of Smart Grid and Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI) programs.

The USB is a consortium of six large utilities working collectively and openly to accelerate efforts to standardize Smart Grid system functionality and communications interfaces.  These utilities control the research agenda, vote on standards proposals, and govern the USB’s collaboration with vendors, industry groups and other Smart Grid partners.

Formed in 2007, the USB was launched on the belief that system interoperability is essential for their companies-and the industry globally-to achieve the societal and business objectives of Smart Grid and AMI programs. Serving twenty U.S. states and Canadian provinces, the USB members are planning and deploying extensive AMI and Smart Grid systems.

THE USB DIFFERENCE

The USB fills a niche not served by existing industry- and government-driven standards organizations.  With ongoing technical support and facilitation provided by a team of consultants, the USB provides a cost-effective, collaborative mechanism for utilities to co-develop functional requirements and technical specifications around selected Smart Grid business processes.  The USB creates high-quality and up-to-date Use Cases and system interface standards that help member organizations make smarter decisions as well as accelerate the industry’s drive toward interoperability.

USB member utilities represent a diverse group of large, investor-owned and public power utilities, ranging from companies with significant AMI scale deployments and meter data management solution integration, to companies early in the planning and roadmap development process.

MEMBERSHIP

Utilities exclusively enjoy Voting Member privileges in the USB.  And starting In 2009, Non-Voting Membership will be open to solutions vendors.

Utilities and vendors interested in learning more about the USB’s activities and membership benefits are invited to contact the USB, at 215.832.4469, and ask to speak with Peter Shaw (Navigant Consulting) or Tom Brunetto (DEFG).
